Hollow Knight — Boss Strategy Guide
The Hollow Knight is the most feared solo elite in the Lv 35-40 band of Windy Desert — a cursed former knight of the Order of the Silver Sun whose fragmented mind drives a punishing Bleed / Death Curse combo. Soloable at level with the right kiting discipline, but a single missed interrupt on Death Curse will one-shot almost any class. This guide covers the kiting rotation, dispel windows, the 50% Enrage transition, and the 20% Death Curse interrupt.
The boss wiki page (Hollow Knight) has the full stat block and lore; this guide is the strategy walkthrough.
For zone context and how this encounter fits into the broader leveling path, see the Windy Desert Walkthrough.
Overview
The Hollow Knight is a single-target, single-phase-elite encounter with two hard transitions — Enrage at 50% HP and Death Curse at 20% HP. There is no soft enrage timer and the boss is soloable, but Bleed stacking and the interrupt check on Death Curse make it one of the gating fights for the Lv 35-40 leveling bracket.
Key facts:
- Recommended level: 38 (35 is technically possible but tight)
- Recommended party size: 1-2 players (soloable, duo is faster)
- Enrage: automatic at 50% HP (+30% attack speed, +20% movement speed, Bleed ticks double)
- Death Curse: 3s channel at 20% HP, interruptible by any stun
- Required gear: Lv 35+ weapon with shield or ranged option (see Gear breakpoints)
- Estimated kill time: 90-120s solo, 50-70s duo
Mechanics
Cursed Slash
The Hollow Knight’s primary attack. Mechanics:
- Cursed Slash (6s cooldown) — frontal cone, 1.2s windup. Hits for ~480 physical and applies 1 stack of Bleed (8s duration, 80 damage per tick).
- The cone is wide (~120°) but the windup is long enough to dodge by strafing.
- Bleed stacks cap at 5. At 3 stacks, you are losing 240 HP per tick — dispel at 2.
The solo player should:
- Circle strafe during the 1.2s windup — never stand still
- Stay behind the boss between casts — the cone is frontal only
- Carry a Bleed dispel consumable (Purifying Tonic) and pop it at 2 stacks
- Pre-position 8m+ away to bait Shadow Step instead of eating another Slash
Cursed Slash strategy: Discipline is more important than damage here. Players who try to trade hits lose the Bleed war within 10 seconds. Slow, steady circling wins the encounter.
Shadow Step
The boss’s gap closer. Mechanics:
- Shadow Step (10s cooldown) — teleports behind the target when the target is more than 8m away.
- No damage on teleport itself, but repositions the boss into a free Cursed Slash follow-up.
- Does not apply Bleed on its own.
The solo player should:
- Stay within 6-8m of the boss to avoid the teleport entirely
- If teleported, immediately backpedal to reset spacing before the Slash windup finishes
- Never run away — running triggers Shadow Step into a free Slash
Shadow Step strategy: This is a “punish the kiter” mechanic. The boss wants you to panic-run. Stay calm, hold medium range, and circle.
Enrage (50% HP)
At 50% HP, the Hollow Knight permanently enrages. Changes:
- +30% attack speed — Cursed Slash cooldown drops from 6s to ~4.2s
- +20% movement speed — kiting gets harder, Shadow Step triggers less often
- Bleed ticks double — 80 → 120 damage per tick per stack
The solo player should:
- Burst sub-50% if possible — Wizard and Gunslinger can sub-50% the boss in 30-40s
- If Enrage triggers, tighten the circle — bigger movement speed gap means you can’t outrun, so stay close and circle
- Dispel at 1 stack instead of 2 — the doubled tick damage makes 3 stacks lethal
- Save cooldown defensives — Iron Skin, Shield Wall, or Vanish for the first Enraged Slash
Enrage strategy: This is the encounter’s damage gate. If you don’t have a defensive cooldown ready for the first Enraged Slash, you will eat Cursed Slash → Bleed → Cursed Slash and bleed out.
Death Curse (20% HP)
At 20% HP, the Hollow Knight begins channeling Death Curse. Mechanics:
- 3-second channel — boss is rooted, channeling a massive shadow detonation
- Detonation — if uninterrupted, deals ~4,000 shadow damage in a 10m radius (one-shots most Lv 35-40 classes)
- Interruptible — any stun, Shield Bash, or hard crowd control breaks the channel and cancels the cast
- Cooldown reset — successfully interrupted Death Curse leaves the boss stunned for 2s, opening a free burst window
The solo player should:
- Save Shield Bash / interrupt for 20% HP — do not waste stuns on Cursed Slash
- Position within interrupt range as the boss drops below 20% HP
- Burst the boss during the channel — many classes can kill the boss before the 3s channel finishes, even if they can’t interrupt
Death Curse strategy: Missing this interrupt is the #1 wipe cause. The 3-second window is generous — almost any interrupt works. Save it.
Party composition
The Hollow Knight is soloable, but a duo cuts kill time by 40%. Three-way groups are overkill.
| Role | Class | Build | Key responsibilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kiter / DPS | Berserker | Cyclone Leveling | Hold aggro, kite Cursed Slash, interrupt Death Curse with Shield Bash |
| Burst DPS (optional) | Wizard | Elemental Range | Burn sub-50% before Enrage, AoE adds if any spawn |
| Flex tank (optional) | Paladin | Shield PvE | Guard Cursed Slash during Enrage, backup interrupt |
See our Berserker Cyclone build, Paladin Shield PvE build, and Wizard Elemental Range build for full loadouts.
Solo composition (most common): Berserker with Shield Bash on a short cooldown. Berserker’s sustain and self-heal make the Bleed war survivable without a dedicated healer.
Strategy
The full rotation, top to bottom:
- Open — engage at medium range (~6m). First Cursed Slash windup gives a free 1.2s window to land opening skills.
- Kite phase (100% → 50% HP) — circle strafe behind the boss. Dispel Bleed at 2 stacks. Use cooldowns defensively if needed.
- Enrage transition (~50% HP) — pop Iron Skin / Vanish / Shield Wall to survive the first Enraged Cursed Slash. Tighten the circle.
- Enrage kite (50% → 20% HP) — dispel at 1 stack. Keep moving. Do not stand still for any reason.
- Death Curse interrupt (~20% HP) — save Shield Bash. Walk into interrupt range as the boss drops below 20%. Shield Bash the moment the channel starts.
- Cleanup (20% → 0% HP) — the boss is stunned for 2s after the interrupt. Burn with everything. Even a single hit will kill it.
The whole fight is ~90 seconds solo. The mistake is treating it like a typical elite — it is not. The Bleed stack management and Death Curse interrupt are the two failure points, not raw DPS.
Gear breakpoints
| Stat | Required | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon DPS | 220+ | Iron Will Spear (Lv 40 BiS until Lv 50) or pre-Cursed Greatsword |
| HP pool | 4,500+ | Lv 35-40 armor + Vitality rolls |
| Bleed resistance | 30+ (recommended) | Shadow-Touched amulet or Purifying Tonic stack |
| Interrupt / stun available | 1 ability | Shield Bash (Paladin / Berserker), Stun Shot (Gunslinger), or any hard CC |
The Iron Will Spear is the standard weapon until the Cursed Greatsword drops (~12% drop rate, expect 8-10 kills).
Pre-fight consumables: stack 5-10 Purifying Tonics. The fight burns through them quickly if you are sloppy with Bleed.
Loot table
| Item | Slot | Rarity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursed Greatsword | Weapon (2H sword) | Epic | +8% Multistrike. BiS for Warrior / Berserker / Rogue / Shinobi through Lv 50. ~12% drop rate. |
| Hollow Plate | Material | Rare | Used in Cursed Greatsword upgrade path. Drops more reliably than the sword itself. |
| Shadow Essence | Material | Uncommon | Crafting reagent for several Lv 40 shadow-element recipes. |
| Windy Desert Map Fragment | Trinket | Uncommon | Combine 4 fragments for the full Windy Desert map (reveals all rare spawns and chests). |
The Cursed Greatsword is the headline drop — the +8% Multistrike passive keeps it relevant well into the Lv 50 bracket. Plan to farm 8-10 kills before expecting it.
Strengths & weaknesses
Strengths
- Soloable — no party finder required
- Predictable rotation — Cursed Slash has a long windup, Death Curse has a 3s channel
- Loot table includes the Cursed Greatsword — BiS for Warrior / Berserker / Rogue / Shinobi through Lv 50
- Kill is fast (~90s solo) once you know the rotation
Weaknesses
- Bleed stacking is unforgiving — one missed dispel and you are bleeding out
- Death Curse is a hard interrupt check — no defensive cooldown, no shield, no cheat death saves you if you miss it
- Enrage at 50% HP is permanent and doubles Bleed damage — no way to skip the phase without bursting
- Drop rate on Cursed Greatsword is ~12% — expect 8-10 kills to obtain it
FAQ
Q: Can I solo the Hollow Knight at Lv 35? A: Technically yes, but it is tight. Lv 38 is the comfortable floor — below that, you lack the HP pool to survive a 3-stack Bleed tick.
Q: Does the Cursed Greatsword drop on every kill? A: No — drop rate is ~12%. Expect 8-10 kills on average. The Hollow Plate and Shadow Essence drop more reliably and are used in the Cursed Greatsword upgrade path.
Q: What if I miss the Death Curse interrupt? A: You will die. The detonation deals ~4,000 shadow damage in a 10m radius — one-shots almost every Lv 35-40 class. There is no defensive cooldown that survives it. Save the interrupt.
Q: Is the Iron Will Spear better than the Cursed Greatsword? A: No — once the Cursed Greatsword drops, its +8% Multistrike passive makes it BiS for melee classes through Lv 50. The Iron Will Spear is the pre-farming weapon only.
Q: Can a Wizard solo this without an interrupt? A: Yes — Wizards can burn the boss below 20% HP before Death Curse finishes channeling. The 3s channel is enough time for Elemental Overload + Multistrike to kill the boss. However, this is build-dependent and risky on a first attempt.
