Windy Desert — Leveling Walkthrough
The Windy Desert is the main Lv 25-95 leveling zone in SpiritVale, sitting between the Sunny Meadows starter maps and the Sunken Depths endgame. Across its three sub-areas you will unlock mounts, complete the Silver Sun questline, earn three gear breakpoints, and eventually face the Lv 95 Echoing Spire Warden — the boss that caps the entire leveling curve.
The map’s signature elite is the Hollow Knight, a fallen member of the Order of the Silver Sun who drops the Cursed Greatsword and anchors the zone’s lore. This guide is the route strategy; individual monster entries live on the wiki.
Overview
The Windy Desert is a single contiguous map split into three sub-areas with their own quest acts, mob rosters, and gear breakpoints. Most players spend 12-20 hours here on a first character and 5-7 hours on a leveled alt.
Key facts:
- Eastern Dunes: Lv 25-45, 14 quests, 1 mini-boss (Dune Stalker)
- Central Mesa: Lv 45-70, 18 quests, 2 mini-bosses (Sand Worm Lv 50, Scarab Lord Lv 60)
- Western Badlands: Lv 70-95, 22 quests, 1 mini-boss (Djinn Lv 80) + 2 elites (Hollow Knight Lv 38, Echoing Spire Warden Lv 95)
- Total mobs: ~1,400
- Total XP to clear: ~4,200,000 (full Lv 25 → Lv 95 curve)
- Major questline: The Silver Sun — investigate the ruins of the holy order that defended the eastern reaches during the Sundering
- Recommended builds: Berserker Cyclone Leveling (fastest clear), Paladin Shield PvE (safest clear)
Quest order — Eastern Dunes (Lv 25-45)
The optimal quest order minimizes backtracking. Follow this exact sequence:
Act 1: Arrival (Lv 25-30)
- A Walled Horizon (auto-complete on map entry) — establishes the desert setting
- The Caravan Master — speak to the Caravan Master NPC at the Eastern Dunes waypoint
- First Sands — defeat 10x Dune Crawlers in the outer dunes
- Caravan Escort — protect the merchant caravan through the southern pass
- The Drowned Map — recover a partially-burned map fragment from a raided caravan
XP target: Lv 30 by end of Act 1. Mounts unlock at Lv 30 after quest 5 — this is a major mobility upgrade; don’t skip the escort.
Act 2: Silver Sun Begins (Lv 30-38)
- Whispers in the Sand — meet the Pilgrim NPC who introduces the Silver Sun questline
- Ruins of the Eastern Watch — investigate the first Order of the Silver Sun ruin
- The Hollow Knight (elite quest) — defeat Hollow Knight at the ruined chapel
- A Cursed Blade — recover the Cursed Greatsword that the Hollow Knight wielded
- Pilgrim’s Bargain — turn the blade over to (or keep from) the Pilgrim NPC
Hollow Knight strategy: The Hollow Knight is a Lv 38 elite with 95,000 HP, holy-aligned smite attacks, and a self-buff that grants +15% damage while below 50% HP. Solo as a Berserker: save cooldowns for the sub-50% phase. As a Paladin: Guard through the smites and let your healer buddy keep you up. The Hollow Knight guide has the full mechanics breakdown.
Act 3: Into the Mesa (Lv 38-45)
- The Mesa Road — escort the Pilgrim to the Central Mesa border
- Dune Stalker Hunt (mini-boss quest) — defeat the Dune Stalker (Lv 42) in the pass
- The Sun Sigil — recover the first of three Silver Sun sigils from a buried outpost
- Crossing the Mesa — speak to the Mesa Caravan Master to activate the next waypoint
XP target: Lv 45 by end of Eastern Dunes. If you’re behind, kill Sand Skitterers — they have the highest XP-per-respawn in the zone.
Quest order — Central Mesa (Lv 45-70)
Central Mesa is the longest sub-area and where the Silver Sun questline hits its stride.
Act 4: The Worm Below (Lv 45-55)
- The Tremors — investigate quakes rocking the Mesa camps
- Tunnel Signs — find three Tunnel Signs marking the worm’s path
- The Sand Worm (mini-boss quest) — defeat the Sand Worm (Lv 50) at the Mesa Basin
- Buried Survivors — rescue three trapped NPCs from collapsed tunnels
- Worm Heart Trophy — turn the worm’s heart in at the Mesa Caravan
Sand Worm strategy: The Sand Worm is Lv 50, ~180,000 HP, and emerges from three fixed tunnel mouths. Bait a tunnel, hit it during the surfacing animation (1.5s wind-up), then back off before the tail sweep. Solo: kite between tunnels — the boss cannot path between them. Group of 3: assign one player per tunnel and rotate.
Act 5: Silver Sun Deepens (Lv 55-65)
- The Second Sigil — recover the second Silver Sun sigil from the Mesa Library
- Order Records — translate five Order of the Silver Sun tablets
- The Scarab Lord’s Tomb (mini-boss quest) — defeat the Scarab Lord (Lv 60) guarding the Library
- Scarab Lord’s Hoard — loot the tomb for Order-of-the-Sun relics
Scarab Lord strategy: Scarab Lord is Lv 60 with 240,000 HP and permanent +20% evasion. Stuns and slows bypass the evasion — save crowd-control cooldowns. Under a Wizard’s Frost Nova the evasion is suppressed entirely for 6 seconds.
Act 6: Into the Badlands (Lv 65-70)
- The Western Trail — escort the Pilgrim toward the Western Badlands border
- Vulture Country — clear a vulture ambush on the trail
- The Mesa’s Last Light — speak to the Mesa Caravan Master for the Lv 70 reward and gear upgrade
XP target: Lv 70 by end of Central Mesa. Most players hit this naturally; if not, the Sand Skitterer grind in Act 4 back-fills efficiently.
Quest order — Western Badlands (Lv 70-95)
The endgame sub-area. Two significant bosses, including the Lv 95 Echoing Spire Warden that caps the entire leveling curve.
Act 7: The Djinn (Lv 70-82)
- The Storm Front — investigate unnatural lightning storms over the Badlands
- Sealed Jars — recover 8x Sealed Jars from Djinn cultists
- The Djinn’s Pact (mini-boss quest) — defeat the Djinn (Lv 80) at the storm-scarred obelisk
- Broken Pact — choose: release the Djinn, bind it, or shatter its vessel (locks a Silver Sun ending)
- The Third Sigil — recover the final Silver Sun sigil from beneath the obelisk
Djinn strategy: The Djinn is Lv 80, 380,000 HP, and casts three rotating elemental shields (Fire / Frost / Lightning). Phase 1: all three shields up — damage is reduced 80%. Phase 2 at 66% HP: one shield drops. Phase 3 at 33% HP: two shields drop. Save burst for sub-33% HP — that’s the real damage window. The Djinn drops a unique crafting reagent (Djinn’s Bound Vapor) used to upgrade the Bastion Spear into the Lv 90 Sunforged Spear.
Act 8: Order’s End (Lv 82-90)
- The Spire Beckons — accept the Echoing Spire Warden quest chain
- Vestiges of the Sun — recover Order-of-the-Sun banners from three shattered chapels
- Pilgrim’s Rest — the Pilgrim NPC departs the story (final dialogue)
- The Sun’s Last Knight — investigate the ruins of the Spire’s outer ward
XP target: Lv 90 by end of Act 8. The Warden is tuned for Lv 92-95; getting to Lv 90 first is mandatory.
Act 9: Echoing Spire Warden (Lv 90-95)
- The Spire Gate — unlock the Spire’s entrance at the western edge of the desert
- The Echoing Spire Warden (boss quest) — defeat the Echoing Spire Warden (Lv 95)
- Aegis of the First Knight — recover the Warden’s shield as your Lv 95 reward
- What the Sun Left Behind — finale dialogue with the Waybinder in Nevaris
- Desert’s End — final map turn-in; unlocks the Sunken Depths portal
Warden strategy: The Echoing Spire Warden is Lv 95 with ~1,200,000 HP and an echo mechanic that copies your last-used skill back at you every 8 seconds. Paladin and Priest are the strongest classes for this fight because both can repeatedly use the same defensive skill — the echo copies a heal or a Guard instead of your burst damage. See the Echoing Spire Warden guide for the full mechanic list. The Warden drops the Aegis of the First Knight, the Lv 95 BiS off-hand for Paladins and Priests.
Monster highlights

|---|---|---|---|
| Dune Crawler | 25-32 | 1,200 | Trash mob, lowest HP in the desert — best XP/s for grinding |
| Sand Skitterer | 32-48 | 4,500 | Highest single-target XP drop in the Eastern Dunes |
| Dune Stalker | 42 (mini-boss) | 32,000 | Eastern Dunes mini-boss. Cleave attacks — face away from adds |
| Hollow Knight | 38 (elite) | 95,000 | Western mesa chapel. Drops Cursed Greatsword (epic, +8% Multistrike) |
| Sand Worm | 50 (mini-boss) | 180,000 | Emerges from tunnels — bait the surfacing animation |
| Scarab Lord | 60 (mini-boss) | 240,000 | Library guardian. Permanent +20% evasion — slows and stuns ignore it |
| Badlands Wraith | 70-78 | 18,000 | Best XP/s in Western Badlands |
| Djinn | 80 (mini-boss) | 380,000 | Elemental shields rotate. Real damage window starts at sub-33% HP |
| Echoing Spire Warden | 95 (boss) | 1,200,000 | Lv 95 zone cap. Echo mechanic copies your last skill — see Warden guide |
Gear milestones
The Windy Desert journey has 5 hard gear breakpoints. Slot notation follows the wiki convention: weapon / helm / chest / off-hand.
- Lv 40 — Iron Will Spear drops from the Goblin Captain at the start of the desert crossing quest. Carry it in until Lv 70. Replace the helm with the Iron Will Helm at Lv 45 and the chest with the Iron Will Chest at Lv 50. This is the full Iron Will set — BiS for the Lv 40-65 mid-game.
- Lv 70 — Bastion Spear drops from the Scarab Lord at the end of Act 6. The Bastion Spear is BiS weapon for Paladins, Priests, and defensive Warriors until Lv 95. Note: Berserkers and Wizards will keep the Iron Will Spear (or a crafted off-hand) until Lv 90 — the Bastion’s block chance is wasted on glass cannons.
- Lv 90 — Crafted Sunforged Spear (recipe: Bastion Spear + Djinn’s Bound Vapor + 8x Silver Sun Sigil). BiS weapon for the Lv 90-95 Warden prep window.
- Lv 95 — Aegis of the First Knight drops from the Echoing Spire Warden. BiS off-hand for Paladin and Priest; strong off-hand for defensive Warrior. This is the last leveling-zone drop before you enter the Sunken Depths endgame track.
After Lv 95 you leave the Windy Desert for the Sunken Depths. The Depths walkthrough will publish in a future Codex batch.
Fastest Lv 25-95 route (experienced alt leveling)
For experienced players leveling an alt:
- Lv 25-30: Skip all cutscene dialogue, kill Dune Crawlers only — they respawn every 20 seconds
- Lv 30-38: Quest-only through Act 2, kill the Hollow Knight with a friend, skip the Cursed Greatsword turn-in if you don’t need the recipe
- Lv 38-45: Skip the Dune Stalker (no relevant loot at Lv 42); jump straight to the Mesa
- Lv 45-55: Sand Worm kill is fast — 3-4 minutes in a coordinated group. Skip the Buried Survivors escort (pure XP time-sink)
- Lv 55-65: Library chain is the XP backbone. Don’t skip the Scarab Lord — free Bastion Spear component at Lv 60
- Lv 65-80: Skip the Djinn’s Pact ending choice (it doesn’t lock anything below Lv 95). Pick whichever dialogue first
- Lv 80-90: Western Badlands trash grind — Badlands Wraiths are the best XP/s mob in the entire zone
- Lv 90-95: Run the Echoing Spire Warden on repeat. He drops the Aegis for the whole party, and the boss-tag XP is competitive with Wraith grinding
Total time: ~7 hours for a coordinated group of 3, ~12 hours solo with a leveling build. The full quest route takes ~20 hours solo.
Endgame transition
The Lv 95 Echoing Spire Warden is the last boss of the leveling curve — defeating it unlocks the Sunken Depths portal at the western edge of the desert. From the Spire waypoint, run west for 30 seconds and the Sunken Depths entrance quest will trigger automatically.
Players entering Sunken Depths from this route enter at Lv 95 minimum, with:
- Full Iron Will set (Lv 40-65 BiS) — keep for transmog even after replacing
- Bastion Spear (Lv 70 BiS for tanks, replaced by Sunforged at Lv 90 for everyone else)
- Aegis of the First Knight (Lv 95 BiS off-hand — this stays equipped deep into Sunken Depths)
- The Silver Sun questline completed (unlocks the Sun-broken Pantheon set in Sunken Depths Act 2)
If you stop at Lv 90 and don’t kill the Warden, you can still enter Sunken Depths — but you’ll be 5 levels under-geared for the first boss and the Silver Sun reward chain will be locked out. See the Echoing Spire Warden guide for the full prep checklist.
Strengths & weaknesses
Strengths
- 70 levels of content with 3 distinct sub-areas — never feels like padding
- 5 gear breakpoints mean leveling alts always feels rewarding
- The Silver Sun questline is widely considered the best-written story content in EA
- Two of the five gear breakpoints (Bastion Spear, Aegis) are still relevant in Sunken Depths
Weaknesses
- The Sand Worm fight is a known performance issue on lower-end clients — long load times between tunnels
- The Djinn’s elemental shield rotation adds a 2-minute “boring phase” to an otherwise fast fight
- Mounts unlock at Lv 30, but Western Badlands has multiple narrow paths where dismounting is forced — feels inconsistent
- The Pilgrim NPC’s dialogue is infamously long (~6 minutes of unskippable cutscene at Act 6 quest 26). Save your scroll wheel.
FAQ
Q: Can I skip Central Mesa entirely? A: No — the Scarab Lord at the end of Central Mesa drops the Bastion Spear (Lv 70 BiS). The Mesa also contains two of the three Silver Sun sigils, so skipping it locks out the endgame reward chain.
Q: Should I keep the Cursed Greatsword from the Hollow Knight? A: No — it’s an epic weapon but the +8% Multistrike is worse than the Iron Will Spear’s raw stats for almost every build. Sell it or dismantle it for crafting reagents.
Q: When do I get access to the Echoing Spire? A: Quest 36, “The Spire Gate,” unlocks at Lv 90. You can technically enter at Lv 85, but the Warden will one-shot anything below Lv 92.
Q: Is the Djinn fight skippable? A: No — the Djinn’s Bound Vapor is the key reagent for the Lv 90 Sunforged Spear. Without it, your Lv 90-95 weapon is strictly worse than the Bastion Spear for most classes.
Q: Where’s the best farming spot for Lv 70-90? A: Badlands Wraith ridge (Western Badlands Act 7, just south of the storm obelisk). Three Wraith packs respawn every 45 seconds for ~38,000 XP per cycle. Better XP/s than any quest turn-in below Lv 90.
Q: Does the Silver Sun ending choice matter? A: It locks one of three cosmetic variants for the Sun-broken Pantheon set in Sunken Depths. No mechanical difference. Pick the dialogue you like — there is no canonical ending.
