Drowned Acolyte
The Drowned Acolyte is a Lv 100 shadow-aligned elite that serves as the primary add during the Kraken encounter in Sunken Depths. They’re fragile individually, but in packs they can overwhelm parties that don’t manage them properly.

Attacks
- Shadow Bolt — single-target ranged attack, 12m range. Hits for ~1,200 shadow damage and applies Shadow Vulnerability (target takes 10% more shadow damage for 6s).
- Acolyte’s Mark — passive debuff applied on first hit. The marked player takes 50% more damage from all Drowned Acolytes for 10s. Cannot be dispelled.
- Soul Drain — channeled beam that deals 800 shadow damage per second and heals the Acolyte for 100% of damage dealt. Interruptible.
- Death’s Release (death) — on death, the Acolyte explodes for 3,000 shadow damage in a 4m radius. Killing blow must be from range to avoid the explosion.
Behavior
Drowned Acolytes spawn in waves of 4 during the Kraken encounter. They prioritize:
- Players with Acolyte’s Mark (chase the marked player).
- Healers (second priority, by threat).
- DPS (default target).
In Phase 2 of the Kraken fight, 8 Acolytes spawn on each pillar. They Soul Drain any player who gets close, which can quickly escalate into a party wipe.
Strategy
The Drowned Acolyte is a burn priority during the Kraken encounter:
- Off-tank picks them up immediately on spawn. Don’t let them reach the healers.
- Ranged DPS finishes them — kills from range avoid the Death’s Release explosion.
- Interrupt Soul Drain on cooldown — Shield Bash, Stun, or any interrupt.
- Dispel Acolyte’s Mark at 2 stacks — letting it stack to 3+ is usually fatal.
The full Kraken strategy is on the Kraken wiki page.

The Drowned Acolyte’s Robe is a notable drop — the +6% shadow damage passive makes it BiS for leveling Necromancer through Lv 110.
Lore
The Drowned Acolytes were once members of an order that worshipped the Kraken as a divine being. When the Kraken descended into a murderous rage during the Sundering, the Acolytes were pulled underwater and bound to him as eternal servants.
FAQ
Q: Can you skip the Drowned Acolytes during the Kraken fight? A: No — they spawn on a fixed timer and must be dealt with. Letting them Soul Drain the healers usually results in a wipe.
Q: Does the Death’s Release explosion damage party members? A: Yes — it deals 3,000 shadow damage in a 4m radius. Ranged finishers avoid this.
Q: Is the Drowned Acolyte’s Robe BiS for Necromancer? A: Yes, through Lv 110. At Lv 115+, swap to the Necrotic Plate from Echoing Spire.
