Kraken — Sunken Depths Strategy Guide
The Kraken is a world boss in Sunken Depths, available at Lv 101-105. The encounter is a single-phase DPS race with positioning mechanics that favor ranged classes, and the loot table includes the legendary Trident of the Drowned King.
The boss wiki page (Kraken) has the full loot table; this guide is the strategy walkthrough.
Overview
The Kraken is a stationary world boss — it never moves, but its tentacle attacks cover the entire arena. The fight is purely about surviving the AoE damage while burning the boss from 100% to 0% before the 12-minute hard enrage.
Key facts:
- Recommended level: 101-105
- Recommended party size: 4-8 players (world boss scales)
- Hard enrage: 12 minutes (boss summons an additional tentacle every 10 seconds)
- Phase: Single phase (no HP thresholds)
- Drops: Trident of the Drowned King (legendary), Drowned Acolyte card, and 4-6 epic pieces
Mechanics
The Kraken has 4 distinct attacks that cycle every 20-30 seconds:
- Tentacle Slam (12s cooldown) — single-target on the highest aggro player. ~8,000 damage. Blockable.
- Whirlpool (25s cooldown) — full-arena slow zone (50% reduced movement). Lasts 8 seconds.
- Tsunami (40s cooldown) — massive AoE wave from one side of the arena. 6,000 damage + 3-second knockback.
- Summon Drowned Acolyte (every 60s) — 2-4 elite adds. They have 18,000 HP and deal 2,500 damage per swing.
Vulnerability windows
The Kraken has a vulnerability window every 90 seconds that lasts 15 seconds. During this window:
- Boss takes 50% more damage from all sources
- Tentacle Slam is suppressed
- Tsunami is suppressed
Your party should stack cooldowns and burst during these windows.
Positioning strategy
The Kraken arena is a circular platform surrounded by water. Optimal positioning:
- Ranged DPS and healers stay at maximum range (25m+) — out of Tentacle Slam reach
- Melee DPS stay between the boss’s body and a Tentacle Slam warning zone — they can dodge by stepping out
- Tanks (if any) stand at the boss’s base to hold aggro, but the boss rarely uses Tentacle Slam on tanks unless provoked
- Everyone moves to the opposite side of the arena during Tsunami — there’s a 5-second telegraph
Party composition
For world bosses, you have more flexibility — the encounter scales with party size:
| Role | Count | Class | Build | Key responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tank | 1 | Paladin | Shield Wall PvE | Hold aggro if party composition includes one (otherwise skip) |
| Support | 2 | Priest | Full Support PvE | Sanctuary on Tsunami, burst healing during vulnerability windows |
| Ranged DPS | 2-3 | Wizard / Gunslinger | Elemental / Multistrike | Sustained damage from range |
| Summon DPS | 1-2 | Necromancer | Solo Summoner | Adds tank the boss for you while DPSing from range |
| Melee DPS | 1 | Berserker | Cyclone Leveling | Burst windows only — too risky for sustained melee |
See our Priest Full Support build and Necromancer Solo Summoner build — these are the strongest classes for this encounter.
Loot table
| Drop | Slot | Rarity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trident of the Drowned King | Weapon | Legendary | Kraken (10% drop) — see wiki |
| Drowned Acolyte card | Trinket | Epic | Kraken (25% drop) |
| Abyssal Helm | Helmet | Epic | Kraken (20% drop) |
| Tidal Chestplate | Chest | Epic | Kraken (20% drop) |
| Coral Ring | Ring | Rare | Kraken (40% drop) |
The Trident of the Drowned King is the #1 Wizard weapon for endgame content. See the Trident of the Drowned King wiki for full stats.
Gear breakpoints
| Stat | Required | Source |
|---|---|---|
| HP pool | 35,000+ | Pact of Stone card mandatory |
| Cast speed (Wizards) | 45%+ | Trinity of Frost set |
| Crit rate (Gunslingers) | 55%+ | Multistrike set |
Below these thresholds, Tsunami will one-shot you. The encounter is less of a gear check than the Echoing Spire Warden but more of a positioning check.
Strengths & weaknesses
Strengths
- Loot table is generous — multiple BiS pieces per clear
- Single-phase encounter — no phase transitions to memorize
- Scales with party size — bring more friends for faster clears
Weaknesses
- Tsunami is a one-shot for undergeared players — high mortality rate for first attempts
- Adds spawn every 60s — parties without AoE struggle
- Hard enrage at 12 minutes means under-DPS parties will wipe
FAQ
Q: Can I solo the Kraken? A: Yes, with a Necromancer Solo Summoner build. The summons tank the boss while you cast from range. Takes 18-20 minutes solo.
Q: What’s the drop rate for Trident of the Drowned King? A: 10% per kill. Expect 10 kills on average for the legendary drop. Epic pieces have higher rates (20-40%).
Q: Do I need a tank? A: Not strictly. The Kraken rarely uses Tentacle Slam on whoever has highest aggro — it cycles targets. Many groups skip the tank and run 4 DPS + 2-3 supports.
Q: How do I avoid Tsunami? A: Watch the telegraph — there’s a 5-second warning before the wave hits. Move to the opposite side of the arena.
Q: Is the Trident of the Drowned King worth grinding for? A: Yes, if you main Wizard. It’s the BiS Wizard weapon until T3 endgame. For other classes, the epic pieces are still good but not game-changing.
